OSCAR PETTIFORD
1946-1949
(BIO / SESSIONS continued)
46 (ca.) Leigh Kamman: "The evening began at a place called The Palm which was a restaurant several doors down from the Apollo Theatre and across the street from the Hotel Theresa. WOV Radio, for whom I worked, had a studio built in this night club/restaurant. All kinds of jazz artists and politicians and actors like Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte, who were just beginning to emerge on the scene, would appear at The Palm. - Duke Ellington came in with Oscar Pettiford who had been a friend of mine here in Minneapolis/St. Paul and had come to New York to join Ellington's band. Pettiford introduced me to him again. We suddenly struck up this conversation and I did an interview with Duke and Oscar. The radio program was two parts; one section of it was titled the "1280 Club," which was WOV's frequency on the dial on AM radio, and the second section was "Life Begins at Midnight." When the end of my shift came at The Palm at three in the morning I joined Ellington and Pettiford and off we went into the night, making those rounds."

From Ace's liner notes (by Tony Rounce): "After backing Ivory Joe, the Ellingtonians got a chance to work up their own head of steam with the vibrant session closer 'Siesta With Sonny' - which comprised one side of the first release from the session, where it was coupled with a pretty pop ballad, 'Don't Fall In Love With Me' (King 4220). ... 'Don't Fall In Love' hit the R&B charts on 5 June 1948 and had a 13-week run with a #8 peak. Syd Nathan followed it up with the other ballad for the session, 'What Did You Do To Me' ..., and King 4232 nicked two weeks of Top 10 chart time and a #9 chart peak. - The whole band was heard to much better effect on the third single from this session, the very groovy, very mellow 'I Like It' ... but the buying public were not overwhelmed, and the track managed just one chart week and a #14 peak. Its follow up, a calypso-flavoured 'Don't Know', ... was reviewed favourably by Billboard in January 1949", but this time around there were not enough takers to give it any sort of chart placing. - The relative failure of these more uptempo tracks may have convinced Syd Nathan that he should promote Ivory Joe exclusively as a balladeer ..."

July (Friday) 2 - (Thursday) 15, 1948. Down Beat 28/7, 1948: The house that bop built, the Royal Roost, replaced its All Star combo with Charlie Ventura and his orchestra last week to remain a fortnight with options. The All-Stars - Erroll Garner, Shelly Manne, Oscar Pettiford, Bill Harris, Lucky Thompson, and Red Rodney - turned in a good, solid account of themselves during their two week stay, then packed up and went their various ways. Their program, augmented by the alternating attraction, Tadd Dameron, should have satisfied even the most exacting listener. While the Stars didn't play as much bop as the Dameron group, they did turn out as a tasty variety of solos. There was little ensemble work, however. Kenny Hagood, former Gillespie vocalist, has moved in as a regular house emcee and featured singer, and does a commendable job in both categories. - Communicated by Leif Bo Petersen.

DOWN BEAT January 28, 1949: "Crowd Gives Enthusiastic Welcome To Extreme Bop By Pettiford All-Stars."
Miles Davis officially joined the band January 5 after having left Parker (he played with Parker at the Roost until December 23, which was the night he ran screaming from the stand) (K. Vail: Miles' Diary, 1996, p. 20), but he may have been sitting in the band before that date. The engagement seems to have been a rather chaotic one, because everybody in the band felt himself as a leader. The band eventually was fired because there was trouble with everybody coming back to the stand after breaks (M. Hennessey: Klook, 1990, pp. 75). The engagement is also mentioned by I. Gitler (Jazz Masters of the Forties, 1966, p.115). Here he refers to an incident where Bud Powell after a solo leaves the stand loudly applauding himself. - Marshall W. Stearns describes it in his book "The Story of Jazz" p. 223f.: "As late as 1948, OP was leading a bunch of 'wigs', i.e. frantic characters, at the Clique on Broadway (the band included Fats Navarro, Miles Davis, Bud Powell, Dexter Gordon, and Lucky Thompson). 'While everybody was carving everybody and taking thirty-minute solos to prove it,' recalls Lucky, 'Pettiford kept on backing us up with his great bass.' The band played forty-five minute sets while one or two members soloed and the rest walked off the stand. 'Nobody bothered about the audience,' says Pettiford sadly." - "[Kenny Clarke:] 'And that was the end of the dream band.' Oscar and Kenny, however, remained at the Clique and they brought in George Shearing ... As well as working at the club, the trio also had a daily 6 p.m. radio gig backing Sarah Vaughan." Mike Hennessey: Klook p. 76.
