"Mambo is a movement back to nature, by means of rhythms
based on sounds coming from mother nature." Pérez Prado
The pianist. Try to find his combo recordings from the forties. Bud Powell modelled his "Un Poco Loco" after Prado's "Mambo No. 5" (the combo recording with p, b, percussion); a comparison of the two compositions shows that Prado is the master of the style. And that stiff drumming on Powell's recording... Prado's effective comping on "Deja Que Suba La Marea" (with Beny Moré) is far ahead of every jazz pianist of the era. "Pianolo" is another gem.
The composer / arranger. He was the master of the extremes. In 1947 Mary Lou Williams, the godmother of the Afro-bop movement, introduced Dizzy to Luciano Pozo y Gonzales, which led to recordings like Manteca and Cuban Be - Cubana Bop and showed that the combination of jazz phrasing and cuban rhythm can be highly exciting (listen, for example, to "Emanon", from the Pasadena Concert in 1948, with Chano Pozo). Prado radicalized the concept. Where bop was often ragged and flashy, Prado simplified the horn parts more and more by using heavily swinging phrases, thus pushing the extremes even farther and making the combination of evenly phrased rhythm and swinging brass sound even wilder. The concept in general was not new: think of Alberto Socarras or of Duke Ellington and Juan Tizol: "Porto Rican Chaos" aka "Moonlight Fiesta" from 1935: the horns' wild swinging above and because of the latin rhythm. - Juan Pedro Rivera said: "Perez Prado was a fanatic of Stan Kenton." Do we have to take this literally? Listen to "Mambo a la Kenton", which is a hilarious parody of Kenton, who does not know how to swing and does not know how to use latin percussion. But, of course, Prez did not have to borrow the "latin tinge" from Kenton; there were other devices. Kenton made a lasting impression on Prado, and it became crucial, but it had much more to do with Rugolo's concepts than with Kenton's orchestral appearance. Kenton's screaming brass was an example, though, and Prado wanted its excitement. But this was the least unique aspect one could borrow from Kenton: in the second half of the forties, Raeburn, even Ellington, Basie, and, ad nauseam, Hampton used massive obertone-killing trumpets. There are bop allusions, and by listening closely, you will also detect Ellingtonian roots in Prado's approach: where else could you find exemplary players like Harry Carney and Cootie Williams, who else had been exploring all possible inversions and was fearlessly using extreme dissonances? The style of his writing for and the execution by the Prado saxophone section remind of Jimmy Lunceford's. Prado must have been aware of all the great orchestral styles, but Kenton/Rugolo added something new; not pep or loudness or novelty; on the contrary: what became important for Prado, was abstraction and reduction. An essay about this influence - if it was an influence and not congeniality - will follow soon. - Perez Prado's music lost its initial fire and tension when he gave up the Cuban rhythm section and introduced a shuffling guitar and a trap drummer using brushes instead. This may have been a condition of the big success, and many listeners will find that from then on his music loses much of its interest. We, too, shall concentrate on Prado's earlier music. But the changes in Prado's music are not (or not only) due to his succumbing to success, but to artistical reasons. So we have to follow his development.
The leader and conductor. Prado lived his music body and soul. "Quien inventó esa cosa loca? Un chaparrito con cara de Foca", is Beny Moré's line in his composition "Locas Por El Mambo". Being surrounded by capable Cuban musicians who had grown up in the idiom, Prado produced his finest recordings in the forties. In the U.S. he was forced by the Local 802 to hire musicians who were unfamiliar with his approach, which led to some shaky ensembles and probably to an exaggeration of Prado's conducting style, too: in order to help the musicians he developped some highly spectacular stage action - with highly effective show elements. And often you do not only hear his shout "Hugh" ("Dilo!") on his records, but also his counting "One, two..." to give the musicians their cue. His complex piano playing would have messed up these musicians completely, so it was inevitable that he reduced it more and more. These are the losses of success.
THE MUSIC: this is a list of tunes in my collection. As in my surveys of the music of Duke Ellington, Don Redman, Mary Lou Williams a.o., I am not trying to give a complete discography, but to collect the influential and the controversial - and to find my way through the collected material at hand.

Ciliegi Rosa. - Perez Prado And His Orchestra: Ciliegi Rosa. Saludos Amigos CD 62004.
Concierto para Bongo. - Perez Prado and his Orchestra: Concierto para Bongo. West Side Latino CDW 61005. - A wonderful example of Prado's ability to transform an ephemeral pattern of the day into high art. He examines that go go fad in a series of small tunes, and abruptly confronts you with what he is able to make out of it: a wild, liturgical, urgent, and very personal 17-minute-concerto. A peak in his later composing.
Cuba Legends (Sampler). - 2 CD. 2000 CDD (Licensed from Saar Records) 200924-304.
El Barbaro Del Ritmo. - Beny Moré (with Perez Prado And His Orchestra?): El Barbaro Del Ritmo. Exotica EXTC004. - Tumbao TCD-010 has the same title, but only one tune is on both CDs: Locas Por El Mambo. - Juergen Woelfer does not pay attention to this CD. It contains at least one collabarotion by Beny Moré and Perez Prado, the already mentioned Locas por el Mambo, and the other titles bear obvious signs of Prado's presence: the sound of the orchestra and of the arrangements. So I will regard the titles of this CD as genuine Prado contributions, until someone proves that I am wrong.

Carpentier, Alejo: Music in Cuba. Edited and with an Introduction by Timothy Brennan. Translated by Alan West-Duran. Minneapolis, Univ. of Minnesota 2001. - Originally published in 1946. "Latin music has always been here - a staple of orchestral film music, of Broadway, and of jazz from Tommy Dorsey to Dizzy Gillespie. The point of Music in Cuba is, among other things, to describe where it came from." - "In spite of its eye for Cuban achievements, Music in Cuba documents the mutuality of the Latin sound."

Leaf, Earl: Isles of Rhythm. Illustrations by Earl Leaf. New York, Barnes & Co. 1948. - Preface by Katherine Dunham. Earl Leaf went to the Caribbean as a photographer. But, as K. Dunham put it, "the photographs must undoutedly take second place to the fast-moving, convincing and colorful dance-cruise of the West Indies."
Mellers, Wilfrid: Music in a New Found Land. Themes and Developments in the History of American Music. Revised Edition. London 1987. - America means the U.S., so Prado is not mentioned. But the book is a stimulating discussion of the some aspects of jazz, opposing Ellington and Kenton: what K. achieves, is "better done by a dentist's drill". But if Prado says that there is something in Kenton, we'd better find out what it is.
Roberts, John Storm: The Latin Tinge. The Impact of Latin American Music on the United States. Second Edition. New York, Oxford Univ. Press 1999. - Quite typically some of Prado's music is called "extremely, if misplacedly, ingenious". Most writers are lost between what they call Prado's "banality" or "over-simplification" on the one hand, and his "originality" and "subtlety" on the other hand.
