See DEMS Bulletin 00/3, p. 3. / Linda Dahl: Morning Glory p. 434, Compositions and/or Arrangements by Mary Lou Williams for the Ellington Orch., 1940s through 1960s: MLW arrangement (not recorded?) / Despite of the plain fact that "perdido" is spanish and means "lost", musicians may remember the Rampart-Perdido Street area in New Orleans. It was along Rampart and Perdido Streets that Buddy Bolden's reputation was originally made. And the Rampart-Perdido crowd helped spread his reputation by following him to the parks. Perdido Street was at that time (the first decade of the 20th century) the home of Funky Butt Hall, Odd Fellows and Masonic Hall, The Zulu Social and Pleasure Club, to name but a few of many interesting places. See Donald M. Marquis: In Search of Buddy Bolden. Baton Rouge 1978. - Perdido Street Blues (by Lili Armstrong, rec. by Louis Armstrong a. h. orch. 400527, with Sidney Bechet) and Perdido Street Stomp (Mezzrow-Bechet Quintet and Septet 45). / Beethoven composed "Die Wut über den verlorenen Groschen" (Rage Over A Lost Penny).

Piano Player, The (Ellington) Eastbourne Performance 731201 / D.E.: Live and Rare 731201 // "[SoSo] has been mistitled by discographers as Wood or Woods. The title Woods belongs to a complete different composition, also known as 'The Piano Player' and has nothing to do with SoSo." (From the liner notes by Bjarne Busk to Togo Brava Suite (Storyville)). The Eastbourne Performance 731201 has both "The Piano Player", an Ellington feature, and "Woods". The "Woods" of the Eastbourne Performance 731201 is the "SoSo" of Togo Brava Suite (Storyville) 710628. There is a manuscript sketch book in the D.E. Collection which contains the title "The Woods". Does the collection's entry "SoSo" refer to this version of "The Woods"? The collection has no "Piano Player".

(It is combined with "Chief" by M. L. Williams). Taffy Twist opens „The Feeling of Jazz", a record featuring Ray Nance. I found the number rather mediocre, but in the context of „The River" it is very strong: just what one has been waiting for. Adding weight to it by putting it into the right place.

Hank Cinq is combined with Epistrophy. / Sheet music in DEMS Bulletin 2000/1 p. 7-8. // The music recalls the mad leaps up and down of Basie's "I Ain't Mad At You", rec. 470522 by Count Basie & His Orch. w. Paul Gonsalves. It goes like this: "I Ain't Mad At You [up] - You Ain't Mad At Me [down] - and that's all!". It was sung by the whole band in unison. The use of the inversion makes it a conjuration or a formula of exorcism. It is a typical laconic Basie settlement of a quarrel. But this does not imply that Duke "stole" it: at the contrary. It is highly interesting to see what Duke made out of the rather simple idea, if he remembered it unconsciously or if Paul Gonsalves noodled around using this theme at a certain occasion. Britt Woodman obituary in DEMS Bulletin 2000/4 p. 2 says that it was composed and played 1955 during a week at New York's Birdland.
